宿場:江戸時代、五街道や脇往還などに中世以来の宿駅を中心に発達した商業集落。立地その他の条件によって規模に差があり、本陣などのある本宿、宿場と宿場の間にある小駅である間(あい)の宿、旅客が少時休息する立場などがあり、各々にはじめは交通機関が、次に市場が付属して発達した。町家が街道に沿って帯状に細長く続くのが一般的な形態である。いわゆる「東海道五十三次」に典型的な宿場町の例がみられる(精選版日本国語大辞典) Shukuba (宿場) were post stations during the Edo period in Japan, generally located on one of the Edo Five Routes or one of its sub-routes.
